Fact Sheet: 2011 Community Impact Grant Recipients

Omaha, Neb. – May 13, 2011 – Eleven community groups were selected by the ConAgra Foods Foundation to receive Community Impact Grants.

The grants, totaling more than $420,000, were given to the following organizations:

Albuquerque Community Foundation, Albuquerque, N.M.: The 2011 Intergenerational Summer Food Program will feed 9,000 New Mexico children this summer at 70 sites. The program will provide a weekend food bag, gardens and nutrition education to children at risk of hunger.

Down East Partnership for Children, Rocky Mount, N.C.: The Healthy Kids Collaborative will focus on delivering nutrition education and a physical activity curriculum in childcare settings. The Partnership also will create a new distribution system to provide families in need with fresh product.

Fresno Metro Ministry, Fresno, Calif.: The Fresno Food to Fitness Youth Policy Council will focus on how to give children in the Fresno area better access to healthy and nutritious foods and safe places to play.

Kid Power, Washington, D.C.: In the Veggie Time Project, students will study nutrition and the environment, run citywide urban gardens, and sell product and prepared foods at markets and restaurants. The profits will support home and community service projects focused on healthy eating.

Knowledge Quest, Memphis, Tenn.: Knowledge Quest, a children’s after-school and summer educational nonprofit, is developing a “farm school.” This urban agriculture project will educate its students in eco-literacy while addressing the issue of food insecurity.

Lowndes County Partnership for Health, Valdosta, Ga.: The Youth Action Project of the Healthy Living Task Force is a health and nutrition program for kids ages 6-18 in southern Georgia. Health care providers, educators as well as the business and faith communities will work together to support better access to nutritious meals, nutrition education resources and exercise activities for these youth.

The Ohio PTA, Columbus, Ohio: Cooking Together, Cooking Forever is a comprehensive, multi-media nutrition education pilot program targeting children ages 10 and older as well as their parents. The program will feature educational videos, enrichment materials and a recipe contest.

Migrant Health Promotion, Saline, Mich.: The Camp Health Aide Program will provide health education and outreach to farm worker, migrant and isolated communities.

San Francisco Food Bank, San Francisco, Calif.: The Feed More Kids Better Food program will develop a comprehensive plan to improve the San Francisco Unified School District’s school meal program by increasing effectiveness of school meal preparation and delivery, improving the quality of the meals, and increasing the student participation in the program.

T.E.R.I., Oceanside, Calif.: T.E.R.I.’s Fit for Life program will provide nutrition and fitness programs for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Tulane University, New Orleans, La.: The Grow Dat Youth Farm is an initiative that will improve community health and enliven nutritional education through an organic farm cultivated by New Orleans public high school students.
